John Henry Bridges was born in 1895 in Humby, Lincolnshire to Charles Bridges, farm labourer, and Frances (nee Thomas).


On the 1901 Census the family had moved to Suffolk and consisted of parents, Charles William (born 1894), John H and Alice Hetty (born 1899) were living at 49, Beach Lane, Bawdsey, Woodbridge, Suffolk.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, Charles, John, Alice and Cyril Gordon (born 1907) were living at the same address of 49, Beach Lane , Bawdsey.

Wartime Service

John volunteered as a Territorial Private No 1951 with 1st East Anglian Division Field Ambulance . No Service Record was found for John. 


The Field Ambulance was divided prior to overseas service forming 1st/1st (which became 88th Field Ambulance within 29 Division), 2/1st, 3/1st (which served with 54 (East Anglia) Division) & 4/1 (home service with 69 (2nd East Anglian) Division). In May 1915 the 54th Division went to Gallipoli landing at Suvla Bay on 10 Aug 1915. The Field Ambulances were sited at Walden’s Point (later known as Waldon Grove) and also at East Anglia Gully close to Gully Beach. John was probably returned to UK following the evacuation of Sulva Bay in Dec 1915 and Field Ambulance. He died on 6 Apr 1916 from Scarlet Fever and is buried in Tring.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £7 and arrears of £8 0s 6d was paid to his father. Brother Charles served as Corporal 8683 in 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regt and was killed in action on 23 Oct 1918.
