He enlisted at Chelmsford and served with the 2nd battalion, Essex Regiment. He was awarded the Military Medal and died during the first Battle of Arras. The Essex Regiment were subjected to heavy hostile bombardment from 3.00 am which carried on for more than 4 hours.  The enemy were seen massed in great numbers. All communications ceased as the wires were all out and SOS rockets were seen from all companies.  The enemy broke through both flanks and advanced into the trenches and there were heavy casualties.
