Born in Whitefield, Lancashire on 17th March 1899.  Son of Ellen Peel (formerly Brookes), later of 348 Moseley Rd., Birmingham, and the late William Brookes.


In 1911 he was living with his parents in Sandy Mount, Station Road, Woburn Sands, Buckinghamshire.


Went to Berkhamsted School. Joined Uppers in January 1913 and left in July 1916 a month before he enlisted in the RAF as a Rigger.


Enlisted on 23rd August 1916 aged 17
