Pre War

Born in the Watford registration district in the third quarter of 1897, [Edwin] George was the eldest son of George Thomas and Harriet (nee Tibbles) Rodway, part of an established Bushey Heath family. His parents were married in the Watford district in the second quarter of 1897.  Their deaths were also registered in Watford, that for Harriet being in 1930, aged 57, and for George in 1943, aged 73.

At the 1901 Census, George [named Edwin G] was 4 years old and living with his parents and 1 year old brother, Peter H Rodway at 4, Windmill Street, Bushey. George (Snr.) and Harriet were 34 and 28 years old respectively and George was working as a general labourer.  The birthplaces are given as Watford for Harriet and Bushey for George and the two boys.

At the 1911 Census, the family had moved to 13, Titian Avenue in Bushey Heath and now included six children: George, Henry [Peter H], William, Dolly, Gladys and Franky, who were 13, 11, 9, 5, 5 and 3 years old respectively. Bushey is the birthplace for all of the children. George (Snr.) is still working as a general labourer and George, Harry and William are at school. Also present is a boarder, Arthur Luddington, who is 28 years old and working as a domestic coachman.

When George left school, he worked for Mr Perrin in the garden of ‘The Cottage’, Bushey Heath.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in London with school friends as a volunteer in the Rifle Brigade. He served on the western front as Rifleman S/13022 in the 9th Battalion and died of wounds on 5 May 1917 at the age of 20. He was buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery at Saulty in France. He is also commemorated on the Bushey memorial and at St Peter’s Church. He was entitled to the Victory, British and 1915 Star medals.

Georges pension record names his father, George T, as the claimant and gives the address as 9 Itaska Cottages, Windmill Lane, Bushey Heath.
