Pre War

Fred was born in Westhampnett in Sussex in 1889 and was the illegitimate child of Florence Ada Rogers. In 1891 he was living in the workhouse, with his mother. In 1901 he is probably the Frederick Rogers in the workhouse school at Rottingdean. By 1911 it seems that he had joined the army and was serving in the Cheshire Regt at Chester (recorded as born Chichester, so that is very likely him).

Wartime Service

In his army records he appears as F L (Frederick Leonard), but he was baptised Leonard Fred. He is shown as enlisting at Hertford His “residence” is shown in army records as Streatham, but this could be his mother's later address. He appears to have landed in France in January 1915.

Additional Information

In army records he appears as FL (Frederick Leonard), but he was baptised Leonard.

All three WW1 medals - may now be in possession of Cheshire Regt Depot.
