Pre War

Arthur George Brown was born in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire in 1890, son of Alfred Edward Brown a Machinist at the Royal Small Arms factory and Emily Eliza Brown (nee Andrews). One of eleven children. Arthur was Baptised in the Parish Church, Waltham Cross, Herts, on 15th June 1890.


1891 Census records Arthur aged 1, living with his parent’s brother Charles (3), on the Swanfield estate, Cheshunt, Herts. 1901 Census, George (10), his parents and four siblings are now living at, 3, Cottage Gardens (North), High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


George married Florence Mable Page the daughter of Alfred and Jenny/Jane Page, in 1910, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have a daughter Doris Edith Brown born in Enfield on 26th September 1912.


1911 Census records George as married, working as a Gardener, living with his parents, and eight siblings at, 3 Cottage Gardens, Cheshunt, Herts. The Census records his wife Florence as living with her parents on the night of the Census at, 63, Crescent Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


George enlisted at Enfield Town on 30th December 1912, for 7 years with the Colours and 5 years with the Reserve, he gave his age as 20 yrs. & 6 months, not married (he was) and a Factory Hand. He was posted to (The Duke of Cambridge's Own) Middlesex Regiment at Mill Hill with the service number 14408 on 1st January 1913. Posted to the 2nd Battalion on 6th June 1913. In September of 1913, Arthur and his Battalion sailed for Malta.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Arthur and his Battalion were still in Malta. Returning to England in Late September 1914, joining the 23rd Brigade of the 8th Division at Hursley Park Camp, near Winchester, Hampshire. They were mobilizes for war and landed at Le Havre, France on 7th November 1914, seeing action on the Western Front. Arthur was appointed Lance Corporal on 9th December 1914.


He was killed in action between the 10th & 14th March 1915, at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle (10th – 13th March 1915), date of death is recorded as the 14th. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial to the missing in France.

Additional Information

His wife Florence received a widow’s pension of 15/- a week from 4th October 1915, for herself and her daughter, she was living at 37 Garfield Road, Ponders End, Middx. Florence remarried in 1916, to Lemuel Ernest Voss. Florence’s brother Private 27346 Alfred Page, of the Suffolk Regiment was killed in action on 25th July 1916. Arthur’s effects of £4-4s-10d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5, went to his Mother Emily Brown.


Arthur’s younger brother Private 16273 Alfred Henry Brown, of the Bedfordshire Regiment was killed in action on 21st August 1916.
