Pre War

Son of the late Edward and Emily Sarah (nee YETTON) BROWN.

His parents married 27 March 1875 at St John the Baptist, Aldenham, Herts.  Edward died 1905 in the Watford district aged 54; Emily died 1915 in Watford aged 58, and was buried 7 August in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.

Gilbert was born 1889 in Bushey, Herts.  He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 1 February 1897 to 11 October 1901 when he transferred to Alexandra School, Watford, from 21 October 1901 to 14 April 1902, when he went back to Callowland from 14 April 1902 to 22 September 1903.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, aged 1 he lived in Bushey, with his parents and five siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 11 he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery aged 23, he was stationed at Campbellpore, India.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 24 January 1915, and died in Baghdad of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Gilbert’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
