Pre War

Harry James Brown was born in Thriplow, Cambridgeshire in 1898, the son and eldest child of Harry and Alice Brown, and one of eight children, although one died in infancy. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Middle Street, Thriplow, where his father was working as a coachman (domestic). By 1911 they had moved to Garlic Row, Oyster House Lane, Thriplow and his father was a labourer for a coal merchant. 


His parents later lived at Scales Park Lodge, Nuthampstead, Barkway, Royston, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 10902, later transferring to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. 


Harry was killed in action on 10 June 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £10 12s 7d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week for life.
