Pre War

Born on 29 Jul 1898 in Bengeo, Hertford and christened on 21 Aug 1898 in Bengeo, son of Owen Edward and Gertrude Ann (Haldenby) Rose. He had a sister Sybil. He was living in 30 Trinity Grove, Hertford in 1901 and his father had his own business as a printer and stationer. Later he was living at “Kilravock," Bengeo, Hertford. In 1911 Alan was a boarder aged 12 years in The Convent, Lower Addiscombe Road, Woodside, and Croydon.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hitchin and joined the 4th Battalion were the ‘Special Reserve’ battalion of the regiment and they were sent to France in July 1916 and took part in the last major battle of the Somme campaign on the Ancre in November. The following year they were involved in both Arras and Third Ypres and in December at the Action at Welch Ridge. In 1918 they were in action during the German Spring Offensive at St Quentin and Bapaume and in August at the Second Somme Campaign and it was during the Battle of Albert in this campaign that Alan Rose was killed, dying of wounds.
