Pre War

Edward Leigh Mildmay Rose was the eldest son Edward G Rose, a Lloyds underwriter (Insurance, Major Disasters) and Alice Marlie (nee Gautier) daughter of a French diplomat.

He was educated at Hildersham House, Broadstairs and Aldenham School. He went to Canada in 1906 and worked in Manitoba and Saskatchewan as a Farm Manager.

Wartime Service

Volunteered for Imperial Service on 7 July 1915 and initially joined 79th Highlanders (of Canada) but was soon with 53rd Canadian Battalion (North Saskatchewan) as Lieutenant.  In late July 1915 he transferred to 1st Canadian Pioneers in order to get to the front more quickly and came over in Nov 1915, serving with Canadian Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from March 1916 when he joined 16th Canadian Scottish and was killed in action on the night of 5/6th June 1916, while out with a working party.

Your son was so fine, he seemed so keen and happy in his work” and a brother officer:” Rose managed to get his men under cover, but was hit by a shell just as he had accomplished it, and died practically instantly. It was a very great loss to me, in spite of the short time he was with us as we found him to be such an excellent officer and good friend”.

Additional Information

Younger brother Basil Lascalles Rose (1893) also served in WW1 as Captain in the Norfolk Regiment.
