Pre War

William Thomas was born 1900 in St John’s Wood, London to Samuel Thomas Rose, a police constable, and Florence Amelia (nee Bamford).


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Drayton Road Elstree. On the 1911 Census the family were living at Malden Road, Borehamwood. William, the eldest son, had four sisters and a younger brother.

Wartime Service

William enlisted in the Rifle Brigade as Private 46334 and was assigned to 1st Battalion which had been in France since Sep 1914 as part of 11 Brigade 4 Division. 


It was during the Battle of the Scarpe that William was killed in action. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France and on Elstree Memorials.
