Additional Information

*1 He is reputed to have served in the 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, but it has not proved possible to identify him in the ‘Soldiers died’ database. If the name is not a duplication on the Hitchin War Memorial (of William Brown), which is a possibility, there are two names which could be considered as probabilities from the 637 ‘W. Brown's’ in ‘Soldiers died’ database. There are 7 ‘W. Brown's’ in the Suffolk Regiment section, but none of them have yet been identified as having been born, enlisting or residing in Hitchin. The first and most likely possibility is William Brown who enlisted in Letchworth. At the time that he was killed in action on the 21st March 1918 he was serving as a Serjeant with the Regimental Number 101654 in the 11th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery in France. He has no known grave and is remembered on Bay 1 of the Arras Memorial to the Missing in France. Another possibility is Wilfred Henry Brown who was born in Stotfold, resided there and enlisted in Bedford. When he was killed in action in France on the 23rd July 1916 aged 22 years, he was serving in the 1st Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment as a Private with the Regimental Number 37088. He has no known grave and is remembered on Pier/Face 2C of the great Thiepval Memorial to the Missing in France. He was the son of Henry and Emily Brown of Ivel Cottage, Asylum Road, Stotfold. Unfortunately, no association with Hitchin has been established for either of these two casualties other than home proximity .
