William George was born on 24 Oct 1892 (baptised 29 Jan 1893) in Little Amwell to Thomas Biscoe Brown a general labourer, and Mary (nee Claxton).


On the 1901 Census William was living at 12 London Road, Little Amwell with his parents, elder brother John, younger brother Frederick and sisters Edith and Florence. On the 1911 Census still at London Road, Little Amwell William was now a domestic gardener, aged 19, and living with his parents, Brothers John and Frederick. With new addition to family Albert born in 1902. 

Wartime Service

William enlisted in late 1914 in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 19810. He was assigned to the 7th Battalion and went with them to France on 28 Jul 1915.


The Battalion (part of 54 Brigade, 18 (Eastern) Division were deployed to the Somme Front. On the 1 Jul 1916 following the lifting of the Barrage the 7th Battalion accompanied by 11th Battaliom Royal Fusuliers attacked successfully the Pommiers Redoubt. During this action William was reported Missing believed killed (his death was presumed later). His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 and arrears of £10 12s 6d was paid to his father.
