Royal Masonic School Memorial, Rickmansworth

Pre War

Born on 12 Apr 1890 in Upottery, Devon son of Daniel George and Frances Ellen (Gilbert) Downes. Educated at the Royal Masonic School 1898-1908 (Head Boy) and London University (BA Modern Languages 1912). He married Valentine Joan Sasse in 1914 and lived at 32 Redcliffe Square, South Kensington, London with one daughter.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant Lincolnshire Regiment and entered the Eastern Mediterranean on 30 Jun 1915. He landed at Suvla Bay on 5 Aug 1915 and was recommended for his Captaincy, but was shot 2 days later during an attack on Chocolate Hill and was in danger of burning when the scrub caught fire. He was rescued from this and was put on the Hospital Ship Soudan but died of wounds on the way to Mudros where he was buried.
