Joseph was born on 30 May 1892 in St Stephen Parish (baptised 12 Jun 1892, Frogmore) to Amos Rumney, a farm labourer, and Sarah (nee Fowler).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Joseph, Elizabeth French (born 1874 and married) and grandson Thomas French (born 1898) were living at 3 Bury Dell Lane, Park Street. On the 1911 Census Joseph, a domestic gardener, was living with his parents at the same address. There was also a brother Frank Thomas (born & died in 1888).

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Joseph. He enlisted with Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 792 with CCLXX (1st East Anglian) Brigade in 54th (East Anglian) Division which was a Territorial Army Formation. He was mobilised at the outbreak of the Great War in Aug 1914. In Jul 1915, 54 Division was sent to take part in the Gallipoli Campaign but the Artillery Units with Joseph were sent to France on 19 Nov 1915 to join 33 Division.


The Artillery and Infantry were reunited in Egypt in 1916. The 54 (East Anglian) Division took part in the Gaza Campaign throughout 1917 and 1918. Joseph contracted pneumonia and died in 87 General Hospital, Cairo, Egypt on 5 Dec 1918

War Gratuity £20 and arrears of £33 2s 3d was paid to his mother Sarah.
