George Hubert Bullard was born in 1895 (baptised 29 Dec 1895) in Royston to Charles Henry Bullard, basket maker & china dealer, and Louisa Beatrice (nee Holland).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Beatrice Flora (born 1895), George H, Kathleen Grace (born 1898) were living at 44, High Street, Royston, Herts.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents (mother Beatrice was assisting in the shop), Beatrice Flora (dressmaker apprentice), George H (chemist’s apprentice) and Kathleen were still living at the High Street, Royston.


His father later lived at 8, The Dale, Letchworth, Herts.

Wartime Service

George enlisted as Private 79458 in the Royal Army Medical Corps for the duration of the of the war on 1 Dec 1915 being posted to RAMC Depot Aldershot on 2 Dec 1915.


He was confirmed for 5th Rate Corps pay on 6 Apr 1916 and registered as dispenser on 15 Apr 1916 (having 3 years civilian experience). He went to India on 21 Apr 1916. George was admitted to Hospital with Dysentery on 24 Aug 1916 and died on 13 Sep 1916.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £9 16s 2d was paid to his father.


As George served in a garrison in India, and not a theatre of war, he was entitled to the British War Medal but not the Victory Medal.


George  is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Royston Church Additional Burial Ground. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OFF GEORGE HUBERT BULLARD
SON OF THE ABOVE [Charles Henry Bullard] WHO DIED AT RAWAL PINDI
SEPTEMBER 13TH 1918 IN HIS 21ST YEAR.
