Louis Albert BURCH (known as Bertie) was born in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, in 1893, son of George and Eliza Burch.


He was baptised on 5th March 1893 in Aldbury, Herts. His father died when he was 2 yrs old.


1901 Census, he is recorded as Bertie, aged 8, and at school, living with his widowed mother, brother's John (18), George (9) and sister Bessie (17), in the village of Aldbury, Herts.. 


By 1911 he was working as a farm labourer living with his widowed mother, Brother George and sister, in Trooper Lane, Aldbury, Herts.

Wartime Service

Enlisted into the Bedfordshire Regiment issued with the service No. 26614,  before being transferred to the 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment with the new service No. G/15207.  


Listed as Killed in Action during the Somme offensive  on the attack in the Redoubt Sector on 21st October 1916, aged 23. He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing. Pier and Face 7 C. (Battle of the Somme 1st July to 18th November 1916).

Additional Information

His mother Eliza received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 21st August 1917, and his effects of £3-12s-10d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
