Pre War

Dudley William Ryder was born on 28 December 1892 in Florida, USA, the only son of William Henry Dudley and Catherine Mabel (Sutton) Ryder originally of Bovingdon, Hertfordshire. They later returned to England and his mother died on 21 September 1900 at Leamington, Warwickshire.  


On the 1901 Census he was living with his widowed father at Soulbury Road, Linslade, Bucks where his father was said to be living on his own means. They had two servants. 


His father remarried in 1903 to Florence Campbell and they had another son, Frederick born in 1906. 


Dudley enlisted into the Royal Navy on 15 September 1905 and on the 1911 Census he was a Midshipman with the Royal Navy on board HMS Indomidable, Chatham Dockyard, Gillingham, Kent. At the same time, his father and stepmother were living at Bovington Cottage, Hemel Hempstead where his father gave his occupation as Retired Midshipman RN.

Wartime Service

Dudley was already serving with the Royal Navy at the outbreak of war as a Sub-Lieutenant and was promoted to Lieutenant on 15 Apr 1915.


He transferred to submarines on 23 October 1916 and was on board HMS E36 when it collided with HMS E43 in the North Sea off Harwich on 19 January 1917, Her entire crew of three officers and 28 men were killed. 


His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire.

His father obtained probate in London on 17 July 1917 with effects of £9687 8s 3d.
