Pre War

Percy was born in Harpenden on 23 Dec 1895 to Henry Josiah Burgess and Sarah (nee Cook). On the 1911 census, the family of his widowed mother and her 3 sons were living at the Batford end of Station Road, Harpenden with their Grandmother. Percy working in the laundry in Harpenden Rise helping to support the family.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 19034 later transferring to 10th Battalion of the Hampshire Regiment as Acting Corporal 19748. He went to the Balkans on 3 Oct 1915. The 10th Hampshires landed at Salonika on 6 Oct 1915. The Bulgarian forces attacked the Allies on 6 Dec 1915 after a heavy bombardment and during this fighting Percy was reported killed in action on 7 Dec 1915. He is remembered on the Doiran Memorial situated on the Macedonian border in Norther Greece
