Pre War

Son of Charles Thomas/Thomas Charles and Louisa (nee CHANCE) SAMUELS of Watford.

His parents married 17 October 1892 at St Giles, Mountnessing, Essex.  Charles died 16 February 1941 in Watford aged 70, and was buried 21 February in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Louisa died 1956 in Abbot’s Langley, Herts, aged 85, and was buried 1 February, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Arthur was born 7 June 1894 in Bushey, Herts, and baptised 1 July 1894 at St James’, Bushey.  He resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Watford, with his parents and two siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a house boy aged 16, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and seven siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 26 July 1915, and died at 21 Casualty Clearing Station of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Arthur’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. There is a Death announcement for Arthur in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 6 May 1916; plus In Memoriams in the issues dated 5 May 1917 and 4 May 1918. *1 Records found have recorded his birthplace as Bushey. This may be the case, however Bushey was the main postal location given for nearby villages and hamlets, so it may be that this information is misleading. If more accurate information found this will be updated.
