Born on 17 Sep 1892 at Aldershot, Hampshire son of Col. and Mrs. Edward Thornton Buttanshaw, of Scots Craig, Hythe, Kent. Educated at Haileybury College 1906-10 and the Royal Military College, Camberley.

Wartime Service

The battalion was in Madras at the outbreak of WW1 and returned to England on 16 Nov 1914. Mobilised for war and entered France on 17 Jan 1915 and was killed in action near Ypres.
