Pre War

George Lewis Sapsford was born in Bishop's Stortford, Herts on 17 August 1888 to Harry and Lydia Sapsford and baptised on 30 September in Hockerill, Herts.  On the 1901 Census he was living with his family at 8 Maynard Terrace, Dunmow Road, Bishop's Stortford. By the 1911 Census, he was registered as a visitor in the household of the Beacon Hotel Stables in Hindhead, Surrey and working as a motor driver. He married Sarah Kate Howard in Edmonton on 9 August 1913. They had three children, Lewis Christy , Muriel Grace and Howard George.

Wartime Service

He joined the Royal Flying Corps on 22 June 1916 and transferred to the RAF on 1 April 1918 when they were formed. He was admitted to hospital on 5 December 1918 but died of meningitis.

Additional Information

His wife Kate received a war gratuity of £14 10s. She later re-married to William Winfield in 1924. His wife, Mrs Kate Sapsford of 36 John Street, Bush Hill Park, Enfield, ordered his headstone inscription, "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN".
