Pre War

He was born 13 Nov 1894 and was baptised on 3 Mar 1895 in Sandridge. the son of George and Ellen Butlin.


1911 Census living at Railway Cottages, Sandridge with parents and siblings. Occupation, Engineers Apprentice, metal turner.


He had previously been a Sergeant Drummer in the Church Lads Brigade, Sandridge Company

Wartime Service

His war record is limited, after enlisting on 23 Nov 1914 he ended up somewhere in the Salisbury Area.


He died on the 16 Mar 1915 in the Army Isolation Hospital, Salisbury. Following his death all who had had contact with him were removed by special transport to the Military Hospital, Tidworth and the barracks were disinfected.


A special memorial service was held in Sandridge Parish Church on the 23rd March 1915 and was attended by the Sandridge and St Alban's Companies of the Church Lads Brigade. The sermon was delivered by Rev. H R Anson.

Additional Information

No records have been found concerning effects or Medals. The HAW Project has a copy of his memorial service, which provides some of the information above. The inscription on his CWGC headstone appears to be of a brother who died in 1995 "IN LOVING MEMORY OF JAMES WHEELER BUTLIN 21ST JANUARY 1995 AGE 107".


Charles is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Sandridge (St. Leonard) Churchyard. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OF CHARLES REGINALD BUTLIN (ROYAL ENGINEERS) BORN NOVR. 13TH 1894,
DEARLY BELOVED, AND EVER REMEMBERED WHO NOBLY GAVE HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY ON MARCH 16TH, AT SALISBURY.
AGED 29 YEARS.
