Pre War

Stanley George Butterfield was born in 1894 in Welwyn, Herts to James and Eliza Butterfield and baptised on 23 September 1894 at St Peter's Church. Ayot St Peter, Nr Welwyn, Herts.


On the 1901 Census, the family were living at White Hill,  Welwyn and his father was a general farm labourer. His father died in 1910 and on the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed mother and family in Ayot Green, Nr Welwyn, and working as a brickyard labourer at the brick & tile works.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Welwyn and served with the Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment).


He was killed in action at the end of the first week of the Battle of the Somme.  His body was not recovered for burial, or not identified and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. 


Additional Information

His mother Eliza received a war gratuity of £8 10s and a pension of 5 shillings a week from 8 May 1917.
