Pre War

David was born in1894 in Hatfield, Herts. Son of Joseph and Ann Scales. He was Baptised on the 7th April 1894, in the Parish of Bishops Hatfield, Herts.


The 1901 Census shows David aged 7 years living with his Parents and 4 Brothers, in Essendon, Herts. and the 1911 Census shows David aged 17 years as living with his Widowed Mother and 2 Brothers in Essendon, Herts. His occupation is a Farm Labourer.

Wartime Service

David was in the 1st Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He disembarked with his Battalion a Le Havre, France. On the 14th August 1914. He died of wounds on the 19th January 1915, and is Buried in Loker (formerly Locre) Churchyard in Belgium. The Essendon Parish Magazine of March 1915 reads: “Mrs Scales received news from the War office that her son Pte David Scales had died from wounds to his left thigh and fractured forearm at Locre, France. David was one of four brothers serving in the Army. He went out with the Expeditionary Force (BEF) in August 1914, and has been in the thick of the fighting from the outset. His mother had several letters from him just before he was killed. David was a member of the Essendon Scout Group”.

Additional Information

His brother Arthur Scales was killed on the 24th September 1917.
