*1 We believe he appears as J Campkin on the Hertford memorials and in these records, which also suggest a connection to Hertford.
Born in 1884 in 8 Blue Coat Yard, Ware, Hertfordshire and baptised in Christchurch, Ware on 28 Sep 1884 son of John and Charlotte Louisa (Hulls) Campkin and living as a lodger in The George Inn, Amwell End, Ware as a malt worker in 1911.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at Bedford formerly 7998 Private Hertfordshire Regiment and died of wounds probably in one of the several hospitals in Lijssenthoek.
Additional Information
Brother of Private Alfred Campkin who was killed in action on 12 Oct 1917 in Belgium and of Private Edward Campkin who died in France on 23 Aug 1918 who are also commemorated on these memorials.
