Pre War
Born 1896 in Marshmoor North Mymms, the 1911 census shows Charles living with his father Harry Joseph, a small farmer, mother Elizabeth, brothers Harry and Robert, and sister Gwendolyn. All the men worked on the farm at Marshmoor. Charles had been a North Mymms Scout and played for North Mymms cricket team.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on the 10th April 1916 age 20 years and went to France in July 1916. In September 1916 it was reported that he was in hospital with shell shock after being buried by a shell. He recovered and went back to the front line.
On the 4th May he was severely wounded in several places, the one in his chest was the most serious and he died in the 11th General Hospital of pneumonia. The Matron wrote to the family saying, “He was a very sweet boy and good all the time.”
