Born 1886 in Hazel End, Essex, son of Samuel and Ellen Canning, later of Arkesden, Essex and then Station Hill, West Mill, Buntingford, Herts. He was living in Mullford, Little Hormead with his parents as a farm labourer in 1911 and later in Hoddesdon, Herts. Enlisted in Hertford.
