Valentine Edward was born in 1886 in Chipperfield, Herts to William R Scott, a clerk and Martha Elizabeth (nee Cornish).


On the 1891 Census the Family were living at Earl Street Marylebone, London. On the 1901 Census the Family were at Fernhead Road, Paddington. His father was a widower, His mother having died in 1899 and Valentine was working as an office with an Electrical Boards Maker. His father died in 1907 leaving Valentine, brother William Frederick, Sisters Beatrice, Lucy, Elsie, Helena and Armina. On the 1911 Census Valentine was living with his older brother William Frederick and two of his sisters at Buchanan Gardens, Willesden and gave his occupation as Billiard marker. 

Wartime Service

Valentine enlisted as Gunner 46971 in Royal Field Artillery and was assigned to B Battery (6in Howitzers), 103 (C111) Brigade RFA as part of 23rd Division Artillery.


He went to France with his Battery on 25 Aug 1915 and 103 Brigade RFA supporting 23 Division took part in the defence of Vimy Ridge in 1916 as well as battles of Albert, Contalmaison, Bazentin Ridge, Pozieres, Flers-Courcelette, Morval and Le Transloy during the Somme Offensive. 


Valentine was killed in action on 22 Nov 1916.

War Gratuity of £9 and arrears of £16 6s 10d was shared among his 6 siblings.
