Pre War

Arthur William was born in 1885 in Ivinghoe to George Scrivener, a coachman, and Kate (nee Chennels). On the 1891 Census George, Kate and family of Caroline, Arthur, Hubert, Ethel and Ernest were with William Chennels at St. Margarets Lane, Ivinghoe. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Summerfield House Stables, Elstree and Arthur was employed as a copyist in the War Office. On the 1911 Census Arthur was an assistant clerk in the Civil Service. He was living at Elmdale, Elstree with his mother and father.

Wartime Service

Arthur was enlisted as Private 1586 in the London Regiment (City of London) Battalions, and was later transferred to the Gloucestershire Regiment serving as Private 32616 In 8th (Service) Battalion,  and Private 38413 2/6th , 8th and 2/5th Battalions.  The German Spring Offensive saw the 2/5 and 2/6 in heavy fighting and in Apr 1918 they were engaged in the Battle of Hazebrouck. It was during this period that Arthur was killed in action on 14 Apr 1918.

Additional Information

Probate of £200 granted to his widow. His Brother Hubert George served in Royal field Artillery and was killed in action on 21 May 1916.
