Pre War

Major John Joseph was born on 30 Jan 1892 to Joseph Seabrook, a brick Manufacturer and Kezia (nee Seabrook). He had an elder brother, William G and four sisters.


On the 1901 Census Major was living with Parents, elder brother William G and younger sister Linda E at Summergrove, Elstree. By the 1911 Census the family were living at Bath Villa, Summergrove, Elstree. Major was listed as a Clerk for a wholesale draper.

Wartime Service

Major enlisted as Rifleman 2963 in 1/9th Battalion (County of London) London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles and posted to B Company. He went to France with his Battalion landing on 5 Nov 1914, joining 13th Brigade 5th Division.


He was involved in fighting around Ypres in 1915 particularly Hill 60. In Feb 1916, 1/9th Battalion were joined by other London Battalions to form 56th(London) Division and then took part in battles of Gommecourt (1 Jul 1916) and Guinchy (9 Sep 1916). It was during the fighting on 9 Sep 1916 that Major was killed in action.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 10s and arrears of £7 0s 5d was paid to his mother.


Brother William served in Army Service Corps and was discharged to Army Reserve in 1917, surviving the War.
