Pre War

George Frederick Capell was born on 22 October 1898 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son and eldest child of George and Silvey Capell and one of seven children.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 1 Water Lane, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a boat builder. They had moved to 9 Layton Road, Brentford, Middx by 1911. His father was again working as a boat builder. 


On enlistment George gave his occupation as a gardener. 


His parents later lived at 120 George Street, Berkhamsted and 102 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

George joined the Royal Navy on 20 March 1917 and was training as an Ordinary Seaman at HMS Vivid (shore base) when he died from cerebro spinal meningitis and heart failure on 30 April 1917 aged 18.


He is buried in Ford Park Cemetery, Plymouth, Devon. 

Additional Information

His mother received a pension of 8s 5d a week. Mrs S Capell, 102 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted, Herts. She also ordered his headstone inscription, while living at 102 Gossoms End, Berkhamsted, Herts., it reads: "OUR LOSS THOUGH GREAT WE'LL NOT COMPLAIN BUT TRUST IN CHRIST TO MEET AGAIN".
