Pre War

Son of Joseph and Clara (nee HODSON) CARPENTER of Watford.

His parents married 15 September 1787 at St Mary’s, Watford.  Joseph died 5 January 1918 in Watford aged 60, and was buried 10 January in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford;  Clara died 1921 in Watford aged 63, and was buried 2 April, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.  There is a Death announcement for Joseph in the Observer dated 12 January 1918.

Clement was born 6 October 1896 in King’s Langley, Herts, and baptised 2 May 1897 at St Lawrence’s, Abbot’s Langley, Herts.

On the 1901 Census, aged 4 he lived in Abbot’s Langley, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a butcher’s errand boy aged 14, he lived in Watford, with his parents and three siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted 25 November 1915: a carman aged 19, C of E, 5’5″ tall, his next-of-kin his father of Watford.  He embarked with the Royal Marine Brigade 28 June 1916, and was drafted for the B.E.F. as a Lewis Gunner 25 September 1916.  Posted to the 1st Royal Marine Battalion 16 November 1916 until 17 February 1917 when he was wounded, and invalided to the U.K. 23 February 1917.  Redrafted for the B,E,F, 12 June 1917, and rejoined the 1st Royal Marine Battalion 10 July 1917, where he remained until his death.  He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals.
