Arthur Frank Sermons was born in 1893 in Barley, nr Royston, Hertfordshire, the son of Frederick John and Annie Sermons, and one of ten children.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at The Mount, Barley, where his father was working as a wheelwright. They remained in Barley in 1911 at which time Frank was working as a butcher's assistant.
His parents later lived at 4 Council Houses, Barley, Royston, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Cockspur Street, London and joined the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), serving with the 10th Battalion in France from 13 October 1915.
Arthur was killed in action on 12 February 1916 and is buried in Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His sole legatee, Miss Daisy Phillips received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 14s 4d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week until her death in 1922.
Arthur was also commemorated on the family headstone in Barley (St. Margaret) Churchyard, his inscription reads;
". . . AND IN MEMORY OF ARTHUR FRANK SERMONS SON OF ANNIE SERMONS
WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE. FEBY. 12TH 1916 AGED 22 YEARS"
