Pre War

William was born in Croxley on 13 June 1891 to Charles and Emma Carter. He was 24 when he died, and his mother was living at 46 Scots Hill. In 1911, Emma was already a widow. William had four siblings and worked at Croxley Mills as a paper mill hand. In 1911, one brother and one sister also worked there.

Wartime Service

He is buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe, between Albert and Amiens in the Somme area. Casualty clearing stations were located here at this time in 1917.
