Walter Cartwright was born on 26 Dec 1874 (baptised 19 Oct 1875) in Wilstone, Herts to William Cartwright, farm labourer, and Sarah (nee Meads).


On the 1881 Census the family of parents, Frederick (born 1863, farm labourer), William (born 1865, farm labourer), Albert (born 1867 farm labourer), John (born 1870, farm labourer), Alfred (born 1873), Walter, Margaret (born 1877) and Joseph (born 1881) were living in Wilstone, Tring.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Alfred (farm labourer) and Walter (farm labourer) were still living in Wilstone. Walter’s mother was working as a straw plaiter.


Walter married Lavinia Collings on 31 Jul 1897 at St Mary’s church, Paddington.


On the 1901 Census Walter (a carman) with his wife Lavinia and sons Walter C W (born 1899) and Harold M (born 1901) were living at 2 Braithwaite Place, Paddington, London.


On the 1911 Census Walter was a publican at the Half Moon, Wilstone living with his wife Lavinia and sons Walter C W and Harold M.

Wartime Service

Walter was deemed to have enlisted in Apr 1918 as Private T/ 438606 in the Army Service Corps. He was posted to No 2 Reserve at Blackheath, London in 667 Horse Transport as a driver. He was taken ill and died of Influenza & Pneumonia on 24 Oct 1918 at his home, the Half Moon at Wilstone with his wife at his bedside.

Additional Information

No War Gratuity was awarded, arrears of £2 18s 6d was paid to his widow, who also received probate of £375 3s 8d and a pension of 13s 9d/week.
