Albert Sharp was born in 1886 (baptised 4 Aug 1886 at St Mary’s, Hitchin) in Charlton, Hitchin, Herts., to Jesse Sharp, brewer’s labourer, and Lucy Jane (nee Wick). 


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, priscilla Jane (born 1876, straw plaiter), Mary Louise (born 1878, straw plaiter 1878), Rose Sophia (born 1880), George (born 1885), Albert, Kate (born 1889) and Ernest (born 1891) were living in Charlton, Hitchin.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, George (carter on farm), Albert (mineral water labourer), Kate and Ernest were still recorded in Charlton, Hitchin.

On the 1911 Census Albert, together with brother Ernest, were boarders with his married sister Rose Sophia and her husband Herbert Slater and their family of 4 daughters at 4, Bedford Road, Hitchin.


Albert married Ellen Wick at at Duxford Chapel, Linton, Cambs. on 13 May 1913. There would be 2 Children- Charles Gordon born 24 Mar 1914 and Eva Ethel born 24 Aug 1915. They lived at 44, Ridge Road, Letchworth.

Wartime Service

Albert attested on on 8 Nov 1915 for the Royal Garrison Artillery at Dover giving his occupation as painter and was posted to 57 Company on 11 Nov 1915 for training. He completed a course in Gun Laying on 22 Apr 1916 and promoted to Gunner on 6 Jun 1916, he was promoted to Bombardier on 1 Jul 1916 bur reverted to  Gunner on 6 Nov 1916. Albert was posted to the British Expeditionary Force on 9 Feb 1917 and arrived at 4th Army Pool on 20 Feb before being posted to 61 Siege Battery on 28 Feb 1917. The battery consisted of 4 - 8 inch Howitzers.


Albert was wounded on 18 May possibly during the Arras Offensive and although evacuated for treatment he died of his wounds on 1 Jun 1917 at 20 General Hospital Camiers, Etaples, France.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £3 1s 8d was paid to hia widow Ellen, she also received a pension of 22s 11d for herself and children.
