Kenneth Thomas was the only son of Jesse Lambly Thomas and Alice (nee Layman).  He was a fluent French and Malay speaker and was for a time a Planter at Bukit Mertajam, Province Wellesley, Penang, Malaya.

His mother, Mrs. A. Thomas, of 12, North Park, Eltham, London, ordered his headstone inscription: “CHRIST'S FAITHFUL SOLDIER AND SERVANT UNTO HIS LIFE'S END"
