Pre War

He was born in 1895 in Layston (recorded as Buntingford in some records) to John and Katherine Castle. In 1901 the family were living in Church Street, Buntingford and Jon was listed as a Domestic gardener.


By 1911 the family had moved to River Green in Buntingford but John had died as Katherine was shown as a widow. William was a grocer’s errand boy and was 16.


Born in Layston and was living in Buntingford when he enlisted in Royston.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Royston. The effects register states he died in the trenches.
