Pre War

Reginald Robert Cato was born in 1886 in Berkhamsted,  the son of Herbert Crockett and Rose (nee Cato).  His parents married in 1889 in Berkhamsted and Reginald was baptised in Tring on 9 January 1895 with the surname of Crockett. 

On the 1891 Census Reginald was listed with the surname of Crockett when the family of parents, Reginald and Herbert William (born 1890) were living at 7 Surrey Place, Tring, and his father was a labourer. The family of parents, Reginald, Willy (Herbert William), Amy (born 1895) and Edith (born  1897) remained in Tring in 1901 but had moved to Denmark Place, Akerman Street. 

Reginald reverted to his registered surname of Cato when he married Florence May Cook in May 1908 in Berkhamsted  On the 1911 Census the family of parents and Rose Mary (born 28 Sep 1909) were living at 44 Charles Street, Tring, where Reginald was working as a carter on a farm. Further children were born to Reginald and Florence: Lilian Beatrice Gladys (born 3 Jun 1913) and Robert (born 11 Oct 1915).

Wartime Service

Reginald attested at Watford on 6 Nov 1915 giving his occupation as ploughman and address as 6 Henry Street, Tring,  joining the Royal Garrison Artillery, at 4 Depot, Great Yarmouth. On 24 Jan 1916 Reginald was posted  101st Siege Battery as Gunner  63521. He left Southampton on 20 May 1916 and arrived in France the following day.  

On 15 Jun 1917 he was detached to CCHA Rest Camp returning to his Unit on 30 Jun.

On 14 Jul 1917 he was gassed and sent to hospital for treatment and remained there until he was discharged to base on 3 Sep 1917. He was then posted to the 31st Siege Battery on 15 Sep1917.  He had leave in UK from 9 – 15 Oct 1917 returning to 31 Siege Battery. Reginald was killed in action on 10 Mar 1918 and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.  

Additional Information

His widow received a War Gratuity of £10 10s and pay owing of £11 4s 6d. She also received a pension of £1 9s 7d a week for herself and her three children. Florence was living at 22 Akerman Street,, Tring and remarried in 1920 to Charles Harris in Berkhamsted.
