Pre War

Reginald Robert Cato was born in 1886 in Berkhamsted,  the son of Herbert and Rose Crockett (nee Cato).  His parents married in 1889 in Berkhamsted and Reginald was baptised in Tring on 9 January 1895 with the surname of Crockett.

On the 1891 Census Reginald was listed with the surname of Crockett when the family were living at 7 Surrey Place, Tring, and his father was a labourer. They remained in Tring in 1901 but had moved to Akerman Street.

Reginald reverted to his registered surname of Cato when he married Florence May Cook in May 1908 in Berkhamsted and they had three children, Rose, Lilian and Robert. On the 1911 Census the family were living at 44 Charles Street, Tring, where Reginald was working as a carter.

At the time of enlistment Reginald gave his address as 22 Akerman Street, Tring and gave his occupation as ploughman.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Watford on 6 November 1915,  joining the Royal Garrison Artillery, 101st Siege Battery. He left Southampton on 20 May 1915 and arrived in France the following day.

On 14 July 1917 he was gassed and sent to hospital for treatment and remained there until he was discharged to base on 19 September 1917. He was then posted to the 31st Siege Battery.

Reginald was killed in action on 10 March 1918 and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Belgium.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £10 10s and pay owing of £11 4s 6d. She also received a pension of £1 9s 7d a week for herself and her three children. While living at 22 Akerman Street, Tring, Herts., she ordered his headstone inscription: "AT REST".

Florence remarried in 1920 to Charles Harris in Berkhamsted.
