Pre War

Arthur Joseph Bradney Simpson (later changed to Shaw-Hellier) was born on 26 September 1886 in Baldock, Hertfordshire, the son of Evelyn Simpson and Fanny Emily Agnes Simpson (nee Phillips) and was baptised on 27 November 1886 in Baldock.


On the 1891 Census he was recorded as living with his grandparents, Joseph and Mary Ann Phillips, his aunt Mary and uncles Charles and Ernest, at 16 Water Street, Stamford, Northamptonshire. His grandfather was employed as a solicitor and brewer. By 1901 he was back with his parents, brother Arthur and sisters Evelyn and Dorothy and living at The Brewery House, Baldock, Herts, where his father was working as a brewer. Also living with them was his aunt Mary Phillips, eight servants and a governess. 


He was educated at Haileybury College, Hertford. 


His parents later gave their address as The Wombourne Wodehouse, Wolverhampton. 

Wartime Service

Arthur was listed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the London Gazette of 21 August 1914. He was promoted to Lieutenant from 28 January 1915, serving with the 7th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. The Battalion moved to Belton Park, Grantham for training then Frensham in April 1915. They landed near Lala Baba at Suvla Bay on 7 August 1915.


Arthur was killed in action on 9 August 1915 at Sulva Bay, Gallipoli, aged 28. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. 

Additional Information

His father obtained probate of his estate in London on 6 March 1916 with effects of £8441 8s 0d. He received pay owing of £42 3s 1d.


N.B. His father inherited the estate of his uncle Thomas Bradney Shaw-Hellier in 1910, which is when the family changed the surname from Simpson. The family home then became The Wodehouse, Wombourne, Staffordshire (now Grade II listed).
