John Sheldrick was born in Ashwell, Herts in 1891, the son of John and Martha Sheldrick (nee Scoot) and was baptised on 1 November 1891 at Ashwell. He was one of twelve children and was educated at Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at West End, Ashwell and his father was working as a builder's' labourer. They remained in Ashwell in 1911 but had moved to Back Street, Ashwell, at which time 19 year old John was working as a farm labourer. 

Wartime Service

John enlisted in Hitchin on 17 June 1916 and initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, under reg. no. 7405, later transferring to the South Wales Borderers, 10th Battalion as part of the 115th Brigade. 38th Division.


He died of wounds on 19 August 1917 and is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £2 18s. She also received a pension of 10 shillings a week in respect of John and his brother Bert who died of wounds on 19 March 1915 and is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.


Brothers Percy, Frank and Fred served in the army and survived the war.
