Pre War

Born in 1881, in Bengeo, to parents William and Eliza, he had one sister Laura and in 1891 they were living at 77 Port Hill, Bengeo, his father was employed as a printer’s warehouseman. In 1901 he was a boarder at 9 Priory Place, St Pancras, and was employed as a cellar man assistant. William married Beatrice Valentina Hollis on 25th December 1906, in Camberwell and in 1911 they were living at 45 Willow Street, Bermondsey, London, with three children, William James, Gladys Beatrice and Frederick Alfred. He was now employed as a loader for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.

Wartime Service

Part of the original British Expeditionary Force, they fought from August 1914, at Mons, Le Cateau and 1st Battle of Ypres. In 1915 from April they fought at 2nd Ypres and on 21st June William was killed as the battalion were moving from the front line into support trenches.
