Pre War

Son of Thomas and Rebecca Henrietta (nee HOPEWELL) CHAMBERS.

His parents married by banns 9 October 1892 at St Mary’s, Watford.  Rebecca died 1915 in Watford aged 44, and was buried 28 July in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Thomas died 1919 in Watford aged 56, and was buried 20 June, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Thomas was born 1893 in Watford, and resided in Watford.

On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1911 Census, a cabinet maker aged 18, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 8 June 1915, and was killed or died of wounds received in action in an unsuccessful attack in the vicinity of The Crater near Givenchy-les-La-Bassée, from where he had been reported missing.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Thomas’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
