Pre War

George Edward Shepherd was born in Baldock, Herts in 1874,  the son of Edward and Kezia Shepherd (nee Andrews). and one of eight children.


On the 1881 Census the family were living at Pantile Square, Norton, Baldock, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. 


He married Ethel Theresa MacNaughton on 30 November 1900 in Sherburn in Hartford Lythe, Yorkshire and on the 1901 Census they were living as lodgers at the home of Robert and Jemima Hall at 49 Stepney Avenue, Scarborough. George's occupation was listed as soldier. By 1911 he had left the army and was working as an agricultural labourer and living at 91 Hampton Road, Scarborough with his wife and three children, Sarah, Rosa and George. They  had another daughter Ethel, born in 1913. 

Wartime Service

Having been a time served soldier, George may have been recalled at the outbreak of war and enlisted in Scarborough, serving with the 8th Company, 3rd Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment. 


He died of valvular disease of the heart on 24 November 1915, aged 40, at 1st Northern General Hospital, Newcastle on Tyne, and is buried in Scarborough (Manor Road) Cemetery, 

Additional Information

A war gratuity was not payable as he had served less than 6 months, but his widow received pay owing of £2 13s 5d. She also received a pension of 15s a week. Her address on pension records was 32 Scalby Road, Scarborough.
