Pre War

Arthur Chapman was born in Berden, Essex, on 5th June 1881, son of John Chapman an, Agricultural Worker and Susannah Chapman (nee Matthews). One of twelve children, although two died in infancy.


Baptised in the Parish of Berden, Essex, on 14th August 1881.


1891 Census records Arthur aged 9, at school, living with his parents, and five siblings in, Starling Green, Clavering, Essex.


1901 Census records Arthur (19), and elder brother William (21), both employed as Carmen & Labourers at a Garden Nursery and boarding with Jabez and Mary Rogers and their family at, 26 Queens Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


Arthur married Jessie Rosella/Rosalie Freeman of Anstey, Herts, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Selina Freeman, in the early part of 1906.


1911 Census records Arthur, married to Jessie, they have three children, Edith (4), Charles (2) and Cissie (8 months), he is employed as a Carter. The family are living at, 3 Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. His younger brother John (24) is boarding with the family.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted at Bedford, posted to The Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment with the service number 16283. Later transferred to the Labour Corps with the service number 109841. He died at home of sickness on 24th September 1918, aged 37. He is buried in the Cheshunt Burial Ground, Cheshunt, Herts.

Additional Information

His effects of £7-15s-3d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £7, went to his Widow Jessie.

His two younger brothers also fell in the war, Private 19628 Walter Chapman, of The Queens Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, was killed in Action on 21st September 1918, aged 29, and Private 21312 Charles Chapman of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) was killed in Action on 20th August 1916, aged 22. Charles lived in Newport, Essex.
