Charles Chapman was born in 1872 in Shingay, Cambridgeshire, the son of Archer and Mary Chapman.


On the 1881 Census the family were living in Shingay where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. 


He married Kate Savill in 1902 in Royston and on the 1911 Census they were living at Old Shingay, Royston, Herts with their two children, Charles (born 1903) and Alice (born 1909). Charles was then working as a horseman on a farm. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He died at home on 12 January 1915, aged 42, from pneumonia contracted on active service and is buried in Wendy (All Saints) Churchyard, Shingay cum Wendy, Cambs.

Additional Information

His widow received a pension of 18s 6d a week for herself and her two children, which was later increased to £1 1s a week.
