David Chapman was born in 1885 in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, the son and eldest child of George and Martha Chapman and one of eight children.
On the 1891 Census the family were living at Church End, Barley, Herts, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They had moved back to Melbourn in 1901 and were living at The Moor at which time both David and his father were working as agricultural labourers.
His parents later lived at 9 Godfrey Terrace, London Road, Royston, Herts and Therfield, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Royston, Hertfordshire and joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, serving with the 2nd Battalion. His regimental number of 9036 suggests he enlisted in 1908 and may have been a serving soldier at the outbreak of war.
David was killed in action near Ypres and death was presumed on 8 May 1918. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £22 and pay owing of £29 6s 2d. A pension card exists with his mother as dependant but gives no details of the amount of any pension awarded.
