John Percival Chapman was born on 8 Jun1895 (baptised 11 Aug 1895) in  Ickleton, Cambs., to John Percival Chapman, farmer, and Gertrude Emma (nee Turney).


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, John, Gertrude (born 1897), Charles Thomas (born 1898), Richard Victor (born 1900) were living at 59, Hilcombe Street, Derby. Father was now an insurance clerk.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents, John (a butcher), Charles, Richard Victor, Maud (born 1902), Thomas (born 1906),  and Mary (born 1910) were living at 41, Dover Street, Derby. John’s father was now a journalist.


Some time after 1911 the family moved 110, Common View, Letchworth. John was working as a butcher  and slaughterman.

Wartime Service

John was enlisted (atttested) in the Buffs (East Kent Regiment) on 27 Jan 1916  as Private G/10142 and was mobilized on 29 May 1916.


He was posted into 3rd Battalion on 1 Jun for his training and following this posted on 5 Nov 1916 to Etaples, France to 38 Infantry Base Depot for allocation to 1st Battalion Buffs on 11 Nov 1916.  This Battalion were in the Somme area following the Battles of the Somme as part of 16 Brigade, 6th Division. He was soon moved into 7th (Service) Battalion on 9 Feb 1917 who were in 55 Brigade, 18 (Eastern) Division. John waas to take part in the 3rd Battle of the Scarpe (3-4 May 1917, part of the Battles of Arras). He was reported Missing and his death was presumed to have been 3 May 1917. His remains were not recovered and and he is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £3 was paid to his father. No arrears were payable.
