Son of Thomas and Sarah Kate (nee POCOCK) CHENEY of Watford.

His parents married 15 September 1887 at St Mary’s, Northchurch, Herts.  Thomas died 1923 in the Watford district aged 58; Sarah died 1944 in the Hemel Hempstead, Herts, aged 79.

William was born 28 July 1888 in Watford, and attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 7 January 1901 to 1 August 1902; he resided in Watford.

On the 1891 Census, aged 3 he lived in Watford, with his parents and one sibling.  On the 1901 Census, aged 12 he still lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a coach painter aged 22, he still lived in Watford, with his parents and four siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Guildford, Surrey; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 1 October 1915, and was killed in action.

There is an article about and a Death announcement for William in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 12 October 1918.



His brother Thomas died 26 September 1916 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.



Unfortunately, William’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
